2,521 games/fragments on one CD from the
Brooklyn Daily Eagle (newspaper) edited by
Hermann Helms. ChessBase format
John
Blackstone, a Life Master now
residing in Las Vegas, sent me a
couple thousand games he input
(!) from the Brooklyn Daily Eagle
archives; an onerous task if
ever there were one. We believe,
and found, that there were people
who are interested in chess
history; this newspaper, whose
chess column was edited by the
master Hermann Helms, was
perhaps the best. John input
the games and also mentioned
which issue of the BDE it came
from if you want to look at notes
and other commentary, which
would have taken him years to
complete. I began annotating
some of these games and used
them later in several issues of
The Chess Gangs of New York
and London. Of course once it
was determined people liked
this small publication, I annotated
more of them for the
print version only. The main
period was about 1880 to 1902:
Lasker, Blackburne, Steinitz,
Pillsbury, Chigorin, Hodges,
Showalter, and such characters
as you might see in Lasker &
His Contemporaries. Interestingly
not all these games are
in ChessBase (thank God).
